Comments: A 22-year-old Trakehner mare from Alameda County displaying neurologic signs was confirmed positive for Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) secondary to Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1). The mare is currently under veterinary care at an off-site veterinary hospital and is showing daily improvement clinically. Seventy-five (75) potentially exposed horses at the home premise in Alameda County were quarantined on April 1st with enhanced biosecurity measures implemented. CDFA has been onsite and will continue to actively monitor the situation.;

Comments: Trace back has been initiated. 30 of the 70 exposed horses have tested negative. 40 of the horses have tested negative on their first test. Final test will be performed on or about 5/10/2025.;

Comments: A confirmed EIA positive equid must be euthanized or quarantined for life 200 yards away from any EIA negative equid as per USDA EIA program rules. Euthanasia was elected for these two cases and was witnessed by CDFA veterinarians on March 25, 2025. The remaining twenty-three (23) potentially exposed horses and the four (4) dam’s side foals on the home premises will remain under quarantine until their sixty (60) day retest.;
